A new
series of 6 180o opening angluar grippers from Techno-Sommer
Automatic is ideally suited for applications which must be performed
within a limited work area. Identified as the GK Series, they feature
stroke-limiting screws to adjust the stroke between 0o and
180o and have gripping torques ranging from 40 Ncm to 4000
Ncm.
When the jaws are completely opened, the work piece can be freed without
having to retract the gripper. This saves valuable cycle time, as well
as the expense of a retraction mechanism or a cylinder. From a fully
open position, the force generated by the jaw tips increases as they
near the fully closed position and become self-locking. Due to the
design of the links, a tremendous closing force is generated. As the
jaws open, the mechanism produces significantly greater velocity at the
jaw tips than during the closing stroke. Therefore, if the jaws are long
and heavy, a damping device or throttle valve may be necessary for the
opening stroke. Switch-activating cams (trip dogs) on the face of the
gripper fingers can be used as "open" or "closed"
indicators. The internal linkages are guided by two side plates made
from hard anodized aluminum. As a result, the gripper can handle large
side forces.
All of these units are double acting. There are two pairs of air
fittings located on the front side of the gripper. The front connections
are factory-sealed with removable plugs. Either pair of air fittings may
be used, depending on the mounting constraints.
Threaded holes are provided for fastening the proximity switch mounting
blocks. The proximity switches may be 3-12 mm in diameter, depending on
the size of the grippers. The jaws of the two smallest pivoting arm
grippers, GK 15 and GK 20, are made of C45 K steel, whereas all other
gripper jaws are constructed from high-strength aluminum. All jaws are
hard anodized and nickel-plated. This guarantees durability and light
weight.
